Nightpaw lay down in his nest, his muscles aching slightly from his long training session with Ashpaw. He stared with desperation into the darkness, thinking that he must find who was speaking to him. He laid down and tried to recall the words he had to speak.
"Shadows in the night, shafts of moonlight, hide all from sight." He murmured and closed his eyes. Instantly he found himself in a dark clearing, his pelt bathed in blood-red moonlight. He shivered. Where was he?
"Like it?" The voice now echoed from outside his head, instead of inside. He turned with wide eyes, staring at the shade that met him. It was almost like looking into a mirror. The tom before him was broad-shouldered and handsome, with sleek black fur and a white chest and nose. His eyes were a fierce amber, which in the red moonlight appeared crimson.
"I am Shadowmoon. Your father." He meowed. Fear pulsed through Nightpaw's heart.
"I can feel that. You are afraid of me?"
"This place is strange." Nightpaw meowed.
"Yes, it is as first. But you soon will learn how to draw energy and power from the Bloodmoon's glare. Don't worry, this place holds no harm for you. You are of the outside word, welcomed here by a spirit who dwells beneath this moon." He meowed grimly.
"Where is this?"
"It is a place where cats not of the Clan who curropted the earths go. But don't worry, it is a far better place than that of StarClan." He growled.
"Am I to be here forever?"
"Only a moment, my son. But don't worry, we will meet here again. I will show you the way to power, son, if you will let me." He meowed. Nightpaw hesitated.
"P-power?"
"I know your ambitions, Nightpaw. For they are my own. Don't try and hide what you want most now. Follow the path I will show you, and you will one day be Nightstar." Shadowmoon meowed. Nightpaw's eyes lit up.
"O-okay!" He exclaimed.
"We will meet again in dreams and daylight, my son. That is a promise." Shadowmoon murmured, grinning slightly. Nightpaw soon awoke to the familiar sights of the Apprentice's den, his muscles stiff with the fear of his sleep. It's almost as if it were real. He thought. And don't doubt it was. Murmured a voice inside his head. Nightpaw flexed his muscles and growled with pleasure when he felt how the Bloodmoon's light had indeed increased his power. Now I'll be a great warrior! He thought, his heart racing in his chest.

She asked sitting up looking at him with care.

Nightpaw felt a spark of annoyance.
"Talk about what?" He snapped.
"Nightpaw..." He turned to fix his sister, Ashpaw, with his fierce amber gaze. Her hazel eyes were fixed firmly on his face. He shuddered a little when he remembered that the snake's poison had caused her eyes so much damage that she could no longer see. Ashpaw flicked her tail, as if she knew what he was thinking, and unsheathed her claws so that they sunk into the moss beneath her.

Hollypaw flattened her ears to her head, then she turned away from him.
"Fine." She hissed then she layed down resting her head on her paws.

Ashpaw pinned her ears back when she heard the anger in Hollypaw's voice. She snorted softly and curled back up, tucking her tail over her nose. She knew she'd have to wake up soon anyway, but her tired bones needed some sort of rest if only for a few more moments. She heard Nightpaw getting up and she knew he was leaving the den. What's gotten into him? She thought.

Hollypaw looked over to Ashpaw. "Why is your brother being mean when all I wanted to know was if he was ok?" She meowed turning to face Ashpaw.

"I don't know. He's usually not so snippy." Ashpaw meowed, yawning and flexing her claws. So much for a nap, I guess. She thought groggily.

Ebonypaw passed Nightpaw as she padded toward the den. Her heart let out a flicker, and she sighed. "Hi, Nightpaw." She said in a dreamy tone. She passed him, and entered the den sleepily. The night previous, she had sense a dangerous power and presence in the room. Especially around Nightpaw. But if he was going to talk about what had gone on in his dreams, he would talk. Ebonypaw was one of the most trusted cats in the Clan, with a brilliant mind to sort out problems. She was nearly the Medicine Cat Apprentice, but something had held her back. It wasn't her path to choose.
Now, if Nightpaw wouldn't talk, that was his problem. Ebonypaw decided to let him cool off. Now that he was gone, the presence had vanished. Sleep would come easy, especially for the exhausted apprentice. "Hello guys." Ebonypaw said with a wide yawn, slinking into the den. As she lay down, she began to wonder how her brother was doing. The one problem she could never solve; Why had he left? He had gone to live with his father only recently, and then found out that he had died. And still, Mountainpaw refused his true home. But why? And so, as Ebonypaw thought this, she began to speak aloud. "But why would he just leave like that? It makes no sense! He was happy here. He had a mentor. Family, even! Why!?!" The confusion and fear in her voice caused it to crack and squeak. She sounded more like she was screeching and talking in a fearsome confusion. She suddenly stood up, fur on end. "I'll get him back!" Embarrassment instantly flooded over Ebonypaw. She realized that she was not only speaking aloud, but had stood up and shouted her last sentence. And the den still had several apprentices in it. She turned red-hot and slumped back down into her den, trying to avoid curious stares.

Ashpaw was startled by Ebonypaw's outburst. She listened to the exchange between Ebonypaw and Hollypaw. At the latest question, Ashpaw curled her lip.
"Mousebrain... She muttered/

Ebonypaw felt her heart lurch. Tears formed at the corner's of her eyes. She swallowed hard, glancing up at Hollypaw. "He's... he's..." A sudden anger hit her like a rock. Why do they care so little about him? They treat him like he's a piece of prey! "Why don't you go ask him yourself!" She yelled, rising in furry. She stormed out, fur standing on end. At the entrance she sat, weeping a bit, trying to compose herself.

Ashpaw sighed crossly. What was everyone's problem? Here in her dark world, she was beginning to see why Saviorpaw had been such a bug about all these quarrels. They were meaningless, she saw now though without the power of sight to really see them. She stretched herself out and sighed. But no cat must know of what I cannot see. She thought gravely, her hazel/green-tinted eyes flashing.
Nightpaw had been sitting in the clearly when he heard the strangled sobs of another cat. He turned to see Ebonypaw rushing out, with Hollypaw storming after her, ignoring her like she was some piece of washed up fresh kill. Nightpaw looked at her as she walked. He remembered hearing about Mountainpaw. Just like Saviorpaw. He thought sadly, staring out at the entrance where he imagined the Snakerocks. It was there he had last seen his brother, standing tall and proud and telling them his destiny lay not in ThunderClan. Nightpaw curled his lips. Now I see. Loyalties don't matter to any cat. All that matters is what brings them to the top. He thought to himself. He turned to Ebonypaw, feeling a pang of empathy for her. Ignore her. A voice growled inside of him. No, I should talk to her. Nightpaw fumed, and ignoring the other voice he padded over to Ebonypaw and sat down beside her, feeling awkward.
"I know how you feel, Ebonypaw. It's tough, but you'll get through. It'll be Ok." He meowed, his voice not really filled with anything but a gentle soothing tone. He smiled at her and there was honesty in his dark amber gaze.

Ebonypaw glanced up at him. She felt a burn in her heart again. She struggled to escape its grasp, trying to tell herself that he was just another cat. But was he really? "Thanks. I think it will be. But what did Hollypaw mean? SHe can't just go and ask him! Can she?"

Nightpaw closed his eyes and turned his face away.
"I don't know. Hollypaw's a rash cat. She could probably do anything if she set her mind to it firmly." He meowed, reopening his grave eyes and staring out into the brambles surrounding the camp.
